Striking workers in Roanoke, VA
The Appalachian Workers Alliance would like to extend our complete support and solidarity to the 40,000 sisters and brothers organized by the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) unions that are on strike across the East Coast, from Virginia through Pennsylvania, for their fair share of wages and benefits that they earned.
AWA is committed to defending the right of Verizon workers to collectively bargain and the right to strike. In this era of rising income and wealth inequality -- Verizon must continue to increase wages and benefits for its workers. We ask, as always, that picket lines be respected and not crossed. We call on working people, their families and all progressive organizations to stand in solidarity with the Verizon workers and take support actions where possible!
This strike is a part of an upsurge in working class and oppressed peoples' actions and movements: Black Lives Matter, last year's USW oil workers strike, the UAW Kohler strike, Wisconsin's "Day Without Latinos", the Chicago Teachers Union strike, and the Fight for $15 and a union movement of low-wage workers to name a few. A victory for the CWA and IBEW will be yet another boost that helps all workers that are fighting for justice in the workplace. Onward to victory!
